Page, AZ—Recently, members of the United States Air Force’s Air Mobility Command (AMC) sponsored an event aimed at bringing together members of the Air Force and veterans or community members of the Navajo Nation to help strengthen ties between the two in hopes of promoting future cooperation. The event was initiated by Staff Sgt. Anastacia Rodriguez who believes that organizing the event will help forge a relationship between the U.S. military and the Navajo Nation: “To me, it portrays a new beginning, a new relationship and it’s exciting. Myself, my family and other participants are excited, because they know that something bigger will come from this visit.”
The meet-and-greet event featured about 30 Air Force representatives and about 50 representatives from the Navajo Nation. The AMC flew in two C-130 Hercules aircraft for the participants to experience, and they also demonstrated air mobility to those in attendance, prompting discussion about the modern capabilities of the Air Force and potential career opportunities.
What’s more, the event served as a way for the Air Force to open dialogue with and networking opportunities for the participants from the Navajo Nation. Richelle Montoya, the vice president of Navajo Nation, commented on the event saying, “I am committed to working with the Air Force and any other service on how we can … make sure that if there’s a kid dreaming about being in the Air Force, I want to work as hard as they are to help them come in.” Additionally, Gen. Mike Minihan, the commander of the AMC, added, “This is the beginning of a relationship where we can come here and let young people know what the Air Force and serving is all about, and also lower as many barriers as we can.”
For their commitment to creating a new and exciting relationship with the Navajo Nation, Salute magazine recognizes the Air Force’s Air Mobility Command as this issue’s Unit of the Quarter. If you know of a unit doing great things, please let us know at editor@familymedia.com.
