What's Your Dream Location?

What's Your Dream Location?

It’s not easy to choose a dream duty station, or is it? Each family has different preferences for what makes a location their ideal location. Whether the priority is exploring local attractions, indulging in regional cuisines, or simply soaking up the natural beauty of a new locale, every PCS brings a chance to discover and enjoy. No matter what, each PCS also gives the military family an opportunity to be a part of a community where they can build lasting memories.

Family spoke with Laura Briggs and military spouse about their family’s favorite duty station. Laura’s husband formerly served as an O3 and a physician in the Navy. They have 3 children, ages 10, 8, and 5. Their last duty station was NSA Crane, Indiana.

How many times have you pcs'd?

We've moved five times during our military journey. Each PCS was a unique chapter in our family's story, bringing new experiences and lessons. Throughout our journey, we’ve learned to treasure each place for its distinctive offerings.

What's your dream PCS location, and have you been stationed there?

While we've always dreamed of an overseas assignment, we've never had the opportunity. However, our favorite posting was at Camp LeJeune, NC. One of the things we loved about that location was that it was ideal for day trips and weekend getaways. There are so many places like Myrtle Beach and Wilmington nearby for us to go exploring. It was perfect for family explorations.

What was your favorite thing about being stationed at Camp LeJeune?

Our absolute favorite aspect of living near Camp LeJeune was the access to Emerald Isle, NC. The beach was a magnificent retreat where our family could relax, play, and create lasting memories together.

What factors do you consider important when preparing for a PCS?

Orders can change, but we do look for locations in case we have some options. One thing we look for is a location that offers decent restaurants and plenty of activities. We’re always eager to explore new areas and take advantage of everything a new region has to offer. It’s about making each place a home, even if temporarily.

Do you have any additional advice for families about to PCS?

My best advice is to remember that it’s always important to remain flexible and positive. There are always going to be instances when you’re not happy with the location you’ve received and are now moving to. Not every duty station will be perfect. However, we’ve found that starting with a list of things we want to do and see in each new location helps us make the most of our time there. It’s about embracing each experience and turning it into an adventure. These moves are more than just logistical challenges and changes. They allow you to provide new experiences for you and your family. While not every location will be a dream location, you can turn the experience of being there one that becomes something wonderful. Remember, it’s all about mindset. You can find all sorts of wonderful things anywhere if you truly look hard enough.
