Look Sharp: The Importance of Pet Grooming

Pet grooming is booming! The global market for pet grooming is expected to swell to $28.2 billion in 2028 up from just $16 billion in 2021, according to research from The Insight Partners. This growth is fueled by several factors, including increasing pet ownership, product innovation and availability, and the escalating awareness of pet hygiene and wellness.

What can you do to keep your pets looking their best? Pet grooming facilities have popped up all over in recent years, and they can provide a spa-like experience for your faithful companion. But if that’s not an option, diligent pet parents can instill grooming habits such as brushing, bathing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and teeth cleaning in pet care routines.

Check with your veterinarian for advice on your individual pet’s grooming needs. For example, some dog breeds might do well with more frequent brushing and bathing, while others require less. In general, breeds with longer fur need more frequent upkeep.

Think of investing in grooming tools the same way as making sure you have bowls and bedding for your pets. While the initial cost of some items such as brushes might be pricey, with proper maintenance, they can last for a considerable time.

Be sure to set aside quiet time and space for grooming. Brush in the direction of fur growth from head to tail. Be gentle but firm to remove dead fur that could become matted. Regular grooming cuts down on shedding, so you might notice less fur on your furniture and floors with regular upkeep. Offering a treat after a grooming session will help your pet better tolerate the experience in the future. If your pet loves being brushed, feel free to do it more often, particularly at times when they tend to shed more.

Nail trimming and teeth cleaning can feel more invasive to dogs, so it’s important to make them feel less anxious. Only perform these tasks once you are confident you have mastered the proper techniques. Many vets do provide nail-clipping services for their pet clients and will also give instructions to dog owners in the office.

Among the key advantage of pet parents taking an active role in the grooming process is the ability to be alerted to any issues the pet might be experiencing. These issues might include irritations, bites, bumps, hot spots, or soreness. It also offers the opportunity for enhanced bonding with pets.

While cats are known for their “self-care” capabilities, they can also benefit from establishing a grooming routine. Regular brushing will help remove the undercoat and prevent hairballs. As with dogs, it’s a great bonding tool and a way for pet parents to examine their pets to look for any potential issues.

If you’re new to grooming a cat, try to make it a pleasant experience for both of you. You might consider investing in a series of grooming tools to get your cat used to being touched. Start with a simple plastic massaging brush or grooming glove, using a light touch at first. Once they like the experience, you can work your way up to slicker brushes, which are designed to remove the undercoat best.

Clipping a cat’s nails is an important part of the grooming process, too. Using the proper tools is critical. Always ask your veterinarian for assistance and product suggestions.
