Advocacy. It’s a powerful word. A word that means taking action by speaking up and showing support. Whether it’s to improve housing, to help military families access better medical care, or to support military spouses who are just trying to not be the highest statistic of those unemployed, advocacy is best used when that first step is taken. But what is that first step?

Whether it’s a concern that is personally impacting you or one that you’ve heard about, it’s always good to check with your local Spouses Club or your Family Readiness Group for others dealing with this issue. Oftentimes, you will hear the issues that are being raised among other military spouses when you attend these meetings.

Learn about your subject. Use your local and online resources to find out the information you’re interested in supporting. There are groups online that are already established and some new ones, and there you’ll find a place to use your voice and get involved.

  • Military Spouse Advocacy Network - This organization offers peer-to-peer mentorship, leadership development, and online resources.

  • National Military Association - This organization is dedicated to helping military families deal with the challenges that come with military life.

  • Council for Military Spouse Clubs - This organization helps those interested in keeping the social part of the military spouse world alive and well.

Remember - speak up. When given the opportunity, remember that your voice matters and makes a difference. You never know who might be inspired by your advocacy and want to also step forward.
