I. Introduction & Area Overview
Introduction Welcome to Fort Drum, the home of the legendary 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) and the motto "Climb to Glory." As the Army's premier installation for cold-weather combat training, Fort Drum forges soldiers who are tough, resilient, and ready to operate in the world's most demanding environments. A PCS to the "North Country" means embracing a true four-season lifestyle, where the community is as strong as the winter storms and the outdoor recreational opportunities are boundless. This is an assignment for the adventurous at heart.
Location & Climate Fort Drum is located in far northern New York State, about 30 miles from the Canadian border and the beautiful Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River. The main support city is Watertown, and the nearest major metropolitan area is Syracuse, about 90 minutes to the south.
The climate is the single most defining characteristic of this duty station.
- Winters: They are long, cold, and extremely snowy. Fort Drum is in the heart of a "lake-effect" snow-belt off Lake Ontario, making it one of the snowiest locations in the United States. Annual snowfall is measured in feet, not inches, with totals often exceeding 100-150 inches.
- Summers: Short but spectacular. They are typically warm, sunny, and not overly humid, making them perfect for enjoying the region's lakes and mountains.
- Spring & Fall: Brief but beautiful, with stunning fall foliage. The spring melt-off is known as "mud season."
Local Vibe & Culture The North Country is rural, rugged, and down-to-earth. The local communities of Watertown, Carthage, and the surrounding towns are deeply connected to the military and are very supportive. The culture is built around self-reliance and an embrace of the outdoors, no matter the season. Snowmobiling, ice fishing, hunting, and skiing are not just hobbies; they are a way of life. The cost of living is very low, significantly below the national average.
II. On-Base Housing & Amenities
On-Post Housing
- Provider: On-post housing is privatized and managed by Fort Drum Mountain Community Homes (Lendlease).
- Reputation & Condition: On-post housing is in very high demand. The homes are relatively modern (most were built after the post's 1980s expansion) and are well-equipped for the harsh winters. The community is organized into villages, many with their own community centers, creating a close-knit feel.
- Waitlist Times: Expect long waitlists. Many families prefer the convenience, snow removal services, and inclusion of heating costs in on-post housing. Apply the moment you have orders.
Amenities & Services
- Commissary & Exchange: Fort Drum has a large, modern complex with a well-stocked Commissary and Post Exchange.
- Healthcare: Guthrie Ambulatory Health Care Clinic provides on-post primary care. For inpatient and emergency services, personnel and families use Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.
- MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation): MWR is exceptional and laser-focused on the four-season environment. It offers rentals for everything from skis and snowmobiles in the winter to boats and campers in the summer. The on-post Remington Park is a hub for year-round recreation.
- Spouse Support: Army Community Service (ACS) offers robust programs to help families acclimate to the unique challenges and opportunities of the North Country.
III. Local Housing Market & Popular Neighborhoods (Off-Base)
Housing Market Overview The local housing market is very affordable, but the housing stock, particularly in Watertown, can be older. New construction is common in the surrounding towns. BAH provides a comfortable standard of living. A 3-bedroom rental typically ranges from $1,300 to $2,000.

Childcare

- Off-Base: Childcare options are available in Watertown and the surrounding communities and are affordable compared to national averages.
V. Things to Do, Pro-Tips & Weekend Trips
Local Must-Dos
- Explore the Thousand Islands: Take a boat tour on the St. Lawrence River, visit the magnificent Boldt Castle, and explore the charming riverside towns like Alexandria Bay.
- Embrace Winter Sports: Learn to ski or snowboard at nearby Snow Ridge. Rent a snowmobile and explore the hundreds of miles of groomed trails. Try ice fishing.
- Hike in the Adirondacks: You are at the doorstep of the largest protected area in the contiguous U.S. Start with a smaller peak and enjoy the incredible wilderness.
- Visit Sackets Harbor: In the summer, enjoy dinner on the water, visit the historic battlefield, and browse the unique shops.
- Go to a Maple Farm: In late winter/early spring ("sugaring season"), visit a local sugar shack to see how maple syrup is made and sample the fresh product.
Insider Info & Pro-Tips
- SNOW TIRES ARE NOT OPTIONAL: This is the most important piece of advice. All-season tires are inadequate and unsafe in a North Country winter. Invest in a set of dedicated snow tires.
- Invest in Serious Winter Gear: You will need a proper winter coat rated for sub-zero temperatures, waterproof insulated boots, gloves, hats, and layers. Quality gear is essential for safety and comfort.
- Fight "Cabin Fever": The winters are long. You must find a winter hobby or activity to stay active and avoid feeling isolated. MWR is a great resource for this.
- Prepare Your Car and Home: Keep a winter survival kit in your car (blankets, shovel, snacks). Have plenty of salt and quality snow shovels for your home.
- Enjoy the Payoff: The summers are absolutely glorious and feel earned after a long winter. The community's appreciation for the warm weather is infectious.
Weekend Trips
- Syracuse, NY (1.5 hours): The closest major city. Catch a Syracuse Orange basketball or football game, shop at the massive Destiny USA mall, or fly out of the larger airport.
- Lake Placid, NY (2.5 hours): Visit the historic Olympic village, home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Games. It's a stunningly beautiful mountain town with year-round attractions.
- Ottawa, Canada (2.5 hours): An easy and fantastic international trip. Explore the capital of Canada, see Parliament Hill, and skate on the Rideau Canal in winter. Passports are required.
- New York City (5 - 6 hours): It's a long drive, but a weekend trip to the Big Apple is very doable. Consider taking an Amtrak train from Syracuse to make it easier.
