Researching schools and finding reliable childcare are often the most stressful parts of a PCS. Starting early and knowing where to look are the keys to success.

Researching K-12 Schools

  • Start with the School Liaison Officer (SLO): Your most valuable resource is the SLO at your new installation. They are experts on the local school systems (both on and off base) and can provide information on enrollment, special education programs, and more. You can find your SLO through your installation's website or Military OneSource.
  • Use Online Research Tools: Websites like GreatSchools.org and Niche.com provide ratings, parent reviews, and demographic data for public and private schools across the country. These are great for getting a general sense of the school landscape.
  • Dig Deeper: Don't rely on ratings alone. Visit the school district's official website. Look at school calendars, course offerings, and extracurricular activities.
  • Connect with Other Parents: Local military spouse Facebook groups are a goldmine of information. Ask for honest opinions about specific schools and teachers.

The School Enrollment Process

Once you have a new address, you can begin the enrollment process. You will typically need:

  • Proof of residency (a lease or utility bill).
  • Your child's birth certificate and Social Security card.
  • Your child's immunization records.
  • Records from their previous school.

Navigating Military Childcare

The military provides access to high-quality, subsidized childcare, but demand is extremely high.

  • The Official Portal: All requests for military childcare (including on-base CDCs and certified FCC homes) must go through the official DoD website: MilitaryChildCare.com.
  • Get on the List EARLY: You can and should create an account and submit a request for care as soon as you have your PCS orders. Waiting until you arrive means you will be at the bottom of a very long list.
  • Explore All Options: The website allows you to request care at multiple facilities, including those on nearby installations if applicable. The more options you are open to, the better your chances of getting a spot.
