When the military moves your household goods (HHG), there's a strict limit to how much they will move for free. This is your weight allowance, and exceeding it can result in a shockingly expensive bill.

How is it determined?
Your weight allowance is based on two factors: your rank and whether you have dependents. The higher your rank, the more weight you are allowed. The allowances are the same across all service branches.

Here's a sample of what the allowances might look like (always check the official tables for the current year):

  • E-4 without Dependents: 7,000 lbs
  • E-4 with Dependents: 8,000 lbs
  • E-7 without Dependents: 11,000 lbs
  • E-7 with Dependents: 13,000 lbs
  • O-3 without Dependents: 13,000 lbs
  • O-3 with Dependents: 14,500 lbs

You can find the full, official table by searching for "Joint Travel Regulations (JTR) Weight Allowance" or by visiting MilitaryOneSource.

What happens if you go over?
If your shipment is overweight, you are responsible for paying the government for all costs associated with shipping the excess weight. This isn't just a small fee; it can easily result in a bill for thousands of dollars, which will be taken directly out of the service member's pay.

How to Avoid Going Overweight:

Purge Ruthlessly: A PCS is the perfect time to get rid of things you haven't used in a year. Have a garage sale, donate to charity, or use your local "Buy Nothing" group.

Know What Not to Ship: Don't ship heavy, low-value items. It's often cheaper to buy new cleaning supplies, canned goods, firewood, or cheap particle-board furniture than to pay to ship them.

Weigh Your Shipment: When the movers are done, they will give you a copy of the inventory sheet with an estimated weight. You also have the right to be present for the official weighing of the truck.

Consider a PPM: For a Personally Procured Move (see our other guide), you have complete control over what you move and can even make money if you come in under your allowance.
