Reading is not only a way to learn, but also it’s a way for a child to develop imagination and creativity. In the ever-changing world of military families, reading can provide a comforting and familiar escape. For military spouse Becca Pass, it’s also a way for her children to find steadfast companionship within the characters of their stories that help them through the ups and downs of military life. Stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, Becca and her husband, Captain Nate Pass, enjoy reading to their children - Evelyn (9) and baby Samuel (2 months). Their family finds solace in the pages of their stories.

Why is reading important to you?

Reading has always been a sanctuary for me, especially as a military spouse navigating the unique challenges of deployments and relocations. Books offer a momentary escape into different worlds and experiences while also creating a sense of community among readers. These stories and characters travel with us, providing comfort and familiarity no matter where we are.

Why is reading important for children?

A solid foundation in reading ignites a child's imagination and curiosity. It helps them explore new ideas and perspectives, fostering a lifelong love of learning. Reading allows children to develop empathy and understanding as they experience the world through different characters and narratives.

How can we encourage children to read?

Making reading a shared family activity can foster a love for books in children. Whether it's through a family read-aloud session or enjoying audiobooks together, creating a positive and engaging reading environment is key. Encourage them to explore different genres, from graphic novels to audio adventures, and discuss the stories together to enhance their understanding and enjoyment.

Our love of reading inspired us to open a used book shop, a venture that helped fund our son's adoption costs. This journey brought us into an incredible community passionate about literature, offering support and friendship. Our experience shows that books not only educate and entertain but also connect us in meaningful ways.
