Sean Kenney's Nature Connects Brings LEGO Art to Old Westbury Gardens
Old Westbury Gardens has opened its gates to a new media preview, and the grounds have been transformed by an unconventional medium: toy blocks. Running from May 15, 2026, to September 7, 2026, the estate is hosting Sean Kenney's Nature Connects Made with LEGO Bricks Exhibit. This event offers a practical and visually engaging way for families to spend an afternoon exploring the intersection of nature and structural design.
The Venue: A Step Back in Time
Located on Long Island, Old Westbury Gardens provides a historically significant backdrop for the modern exhibit. The estate is the former home of businessman John S. Phipps and his wife, Margarita Grace Phipps, and the main house was completed in 1906. Today, the property operates as a not-for-profit organization and museum.
Walking through the Carolean Revival mansion is like stepping into a time machine, offering a direct glimpse into early 20th-century American architecture. The 160 acres of grounds are well maintained and offer a traditional, formal canvas for the contemporary LEGO sculptures.
The Exhibition: Where Art Meets Nature
The creator behind the exhibit, Sean Kenney, is a New York-based artist who has worked with LEGO bricks professionally for over 20 years. As a former LEGO Certified Professional, Kenney focuses on creating intricate, nature-based pieces designed to spark conversations about conservation.
The Nature Connects exhibition uses large-scale sculptures to highlight the balance of ecosystems and mankind's relationship with the natural world. What makes the installation effective is the placement of the artwork. Rather than feeling out of place, the geometric sculptures are cleverly positioned around the estate, naturally blending into the flora. The contrast between the formal, historic gardens and the structured toy bricks creates a distinct visual experience.
A Realistic Family Excursion
From a practical standpoint, this exhibit provides a solid day of exploration for families. It took our group approximately 90 minutes to explore every piece while taking our time. The layout is easy to navigate, and it keeps children engaged without being overwhelming.
Adding to the family-friendly appeal, the estate features a play area situated in a thatched-roof cottage that was originally used by the Phipps children. Here, kids can take a break and build their own creations, making the visit interactive rather than purely observational.
Overall, Nature Connects at Old Westbury Gardens is a worthwhile outing. It successfully combines the historical elements of a Long Island landmark with an accessible art installation.
